Title: Apple and worm name tags - Name recognition and Art
Cut out apple shapes about the size of your hand on cereal boxes. Cut out and use as a pattern. Let each child trace the pattern on red construction paper and then cut it out. Use green constuction paper scraps and cut out a leaf shape. Children then can cut out a worm shape or use a piece of plastic foam packing material to add the apple. Write or let the children write their names on the apple. Identify each letter of their name. Apples then can be placed all mixed up on a table and let each child identify their own name.

 Title: APPLE ACTIVITIES
 Submitted by Elise
I read Albert's Field Trip (about a trip to the apple orchard) - author's name escapes me.  Then we go on a nature walk and look for twigs that look like miniature trees - with smaller branches.  Each child needs one.  Then we begin.  The first thing you need to do is make play doh - since I have K's I do this with them.  They LOVE to squeeze it!  We add green food coloring.  each child gets a ball of play doh - first, of course, I let them play with it or they will never work with it!  They each press their ball into a clear plastic tumbler - this becomes the "grass."  We let it harden a bit overnight.  Then they each place their "tree" into the "grass" and that sits until the doh is totally hard - another day or two.  They they use crumpled pieces of 1" X  2" red tissue paper and glue them on the twigs - these are the "apples," of course!  They are all displayed on a counter and labelled "An Orchard In The Garden" (again, the name of my program being Children's Garden).

I also have in the listening center The Apple Tree Pie by Zoe Hall.

I tie apples into Halloween too - toward the end of September we peel apples and carve out "faces."  These sit for several weeks and shrivel up to become witch heads.  We add white hair and a hat (in ice cream cone painted black) - and they hang in our room through Halloween.

You turn the apple upsidedown, with the stem side up. You take two small bites at the top and one in the middle and then one bigger at the bottom. The kids are really excitied when they see the face !  Then we set them on the table and let them smile at us. We then compare their faces and vote if we want to eat them or not.  Most of the time they want to eat them and give each other instructions on how to make the face on the back.

 Title: Apple Unit
Following cross-curriculum ideas submitted by Stella
Math: Graphing; Comparing; Counting; Sorting; Observing
The students create a real floor graph with apples.
Teacher Preparation:
Make a large floor graph (3 columns- there's a commercially made one out there); cut out apples in 3 colors (red, green, yellow);
create a student copy of the apple graph
Procedure:
1.  Have the children bring in 1 apple (mention it doesn't need to be red....) Allow a couple of days for students to bring in apples.
2.  Gather class in a circle and ask questions like: Who brought red apples? yellow? small apples? big? count... compare apples
3.  Tell the class that they will organize the apples in a graph so they can see how much we really have for each color of apple.
4.  Children will put their apple on the appropriate column  (red, yellow, green).
5.  Watch their faces get very excited when the graph starts to come alive in front of them and they start egging on their color of apple.
6.  When everyone is done, ask them what they see...encourage them to share their observations and thoughts about the graph in front of them. Children will notice which group of apples has the most and the least; how many apples in each color...
7. Teacher can lead students to specific observations like how many red apples all together...
8.   After the activity, put apples aside (for Apple Carousel project) and recreate the floor graph by using the cut up shapes of apples; display the graph somewhere in the room; the next day, have the children recall the activity and discuss...observe children going to the graph and see them count the apples again and again and again.
9.  If appropriate with your class:  have the children color in their copy of their apple graph to go home (great assessment tool).

 Title: Apple Carousel
(use apples previously used in the apple graph)
Teacher Preparation:  Animal crackers, peanut butter, straws (cut in thirds), and a knife
1.  Cut the apple in half.
2.  Stick 4 pieces of straw around the bottom half of the apple.
3.  Stick the top part of the apple on the straws.
4.  Stick the animals (animal crackers) on the straws with peanut butter.
5.  Viola!  You have an apple carousel with lots of different animals!
The children love this project and almost do not want to eat it because its very cute!

 Title: The Apple Story...
Johnny was a little boy, who lived on a big farm. There were lots of animals on his farm but, there were no other children around. One day Johnny went to his mother and said he was bored and wanted something to do. So, his mother asked him to go out and see if he could find: "A red house with NO doors, NO windows, but a star inside". Little Johnny was a bit puzzled. But he headed out the door and started to look. First he saw his cat and said "Cat, do you know where there is a red house with NO doors, NO windows but a star inside?" "MEOW-MEOW- no i don't" answered the cat. Little Johnny walked up the road a little further and came across the chickens. "Hen," he asked, "do you know where there is a red house with NO doors, NO windows but a star inside?" The hen answered "cluck-cluck no, I don't know". So, Johnny kept walking and hunting, until he encountered the sheep in the pasture. "Sheep, do you know where there is a red house with NO doors, NO windows but a star inside?" And the sheep replied "Baa-baa no, I don't" Little Johnny was getting discouraged. But, he kept looking. He saw his horse, up on top of a hill, eating from the apple tree and he went up to him. "Horse, do you know where I can find a red house with NO doors, NO windows but a star inside?" "Neigh-neigh no, I don't" answered the horse, and just then,an apple fell from the tree and hit Johnny right on the head!! Little Johnny picked up the apple and started walking home. He was sad that he couldn't find the red house. He walked into the house and said "Mom, I'm sorry, I looked everywhere but, I can't... " His Mother cut him off, before he could finish "Johnny, you FOUND it!!!" Johnny looked even more confused and said "WHAT?" His mother said "You found the red house, with NO doors, NO windows but a star inside" She took the apple and cut it in half and showed him the star!
* Now.... when you cut the apple, you don't cut along the core~ you cut it across the core (holding top and bottom in your hand, and cutting through the center. The core makes a star shape.) After showing how his Mom cut the apple and showed Johnny, ask the children "Who would this be a house FOR?"
(of course, the answer is a worm.)
You can add more to the story, by having Johnny ask more animals if they know where there is such a house. You can add cow, goat, dog, rooster, turkey, duck. **Usually, when I tell this story, I have the children do the animal sounds with me!!
