BRUSHING TEETH
POEM
Submitted by Lauren
You brush your teeth up,
You brush your teeth down.
You brush 'em, brush 'em all around.
You don't want cavities,
No, no not gum disease.
You tell those germs to get out of town!
Ohley!"
*My lovely mother, Maria (also a preschool teacher) passed this one down to me.
Enjoy!
Cleaning Teeth
take
the ends of two leater soda bottles and give to each student (put duck
tape around the cut edge to ensure saftey) add shaving cream and give
each student a tooth brush and tlet them brush the "teeth"
A Toothy Grin
Submitted by Ginger
At the beginning of my unit on Dental Health, I
had each child smile big and I took a picture. I had some diecuts
of teeth that I purchased from a teacher store. I cut out their
grins and taped them on a tooth. I hung their smiles on the door
and titled it "Can you find my toothy grin?" I didn't put any
names on the teeth. Each day as we lined up, they were always
trying to find their smile and their friend's smile. They loved
it!! I also had lots of compliments from other classes walking by and
looking at all the smiles.

This is an activity you can play inside or out. You have the children
make a circle to represent a mouth. Then you have them hide their
eyes. While the other childrens eyes are closed you choose one student
to be the missing tooth.
You have that child squat down then you cover them with a red or pink blanket.
The other children open their eyes and try to guess who is the missing tooth.
Whoever guesses gets to pull the next tooth or cover with a blanket. Kids really
enjoy this game.
Happy Foods and Grouchy foods
Submitted by Wendy
Children can do a magazine search for 'tooth friendly foods' and
paste them onto the drawing of a child with a big toothy smile. When
they find sugary and 'non-tooth friendly foods' they can paste them onto
the drawing of a child with a very sad face. the teacher needs to emphasise
that
even though the foods might taste nice, sometimes they make the teeth feel
a bit "grouchy". This can also be done, using Oscar the Grouch from Seseme
Street and and big bin and a large drawing of a dinner plate with a big tick
on it.
I Have a Loose Tooth
A wiggelty jiggelty loose tooth
I have a loose tooth
A-hanging by a thread.
So I pulled my loose tooth
My wiggelty jiggelty loose tooth
Put it 'neath my pillow
And then I went to bed.
The fairy took my loose tooth
My wiggelty jiggelty loose tooth
And now I have a nickel
And a hole inside my head.
GLITTERY TEETH NECKLACE
Mix 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup clear glitter, and 1/3 cup water;
then knead the dough to get out any lumps. Have each child flatten
a ball of dough, then shape it into a tooth by making a small dent
at the top of the dough with a finger and a bigger dent at the bottom.
Make a small hole at the top of each tooth with a drinking straw.
Bake the teeth at 250 degrees on a cookie sheet for an hour, or until
they are hard. When each tooth has cooled, inset a length of yarn
through the hole, and knot the ends to complete the necklace. Your
students will be all smiles!
TOOTH BRUSHING SONGS
Are Your Teeth Clean and White?
(Sung to: "Do Your Ears Hang Low!")
Do you brush them every night?
Do you brush them in the morning?
Do you brush them right?
Do you brush them side to side?
Are your teeth clean and white?
Do you floss them good
To remove the bits of food?
Do you floss them every day?
Like you know you should?
Do you take good care of
The teeth that are there?
Do you floss them good?
Brush Your Teeth
(Sung to: "Row, Row Row your Boat")
Brush, brush, brush your teeth,
At least two times a day.
Cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning,
Fighting tooth decay.
Floss, floss,floss your teeth,
Every single day.
Gently, gently, gently,gently,
Whisking plaque away.
Rinse, rinse, rinse your teeth,
Every single day.
Swishing, swishing, swishing, swishing,
Fighting tooth decay.
HEALTHY TEETH TUNE
Healthy Teeth Tune
(sung to the tune of “Here We
Go Round the Mulberry Bush”)
This is the way we brush our teeth,
Brush our teeth, brush our teeth!
This is the way we brush our teeth,
Morning, noon, and night!
We brush them up.
We brush them down.
Up and down!
Up and down!
We brush them up.
We brush them down.
Morning, noon, and night!
*"EGGS"TRA FUN EXPERIMENT
One thing we do when doing dental health is to hard boil an egg ahead
of
time. Then we bring in some dark soda. We place the egg in the soda for a
day. Then the next day we talk about why we should keep our teeth clean and
how we can keep them clean.
Then we take the egg out. It is discolored, yellow, looks like plaque.
We
take a tooth brush with a little tooth paste, that's how we fit in how much
they should be using, and brush it off. It REALLY comes off. They love it.
They each get a turn.
SODA BOTTLE TEETH
Cut the bottoms off of large plastic soda bottles and turn them upside
down - they look like teeth! Secure a dozen or so together. Spray them
with
shaving cream and give the kids toothbrushes to brush the teeth clean.
GIANT TOOTH BRUSH
Fold a 9x12 piece of white construction paper in half. Draw lines and
have
children cut up the lines and make bristles for the tooth brush.
Make a brush handle out of colored construction paper. Put child's
name on
the handle. Glue brush onto handle. Give the children a variety of materials
to decorate their toothbrush handle with (like glitter and stickers).
TOOTH FAIRY ART PROJECT
Use the following sizes of construction
paper to assemble the very small tooth
fairy.
3x3 fleshtone for head
4 1/2x3 pink for dress and arms
4 1/2x3 yellow, folded in half for wings
(then cover them with a doily)
3x3 blue for wand, bag, and shoes
tooth stickers
SCIENCE FOR DENTAL
Egg teeth-Boil some eggs and then show them to the children as pretty
white teeth. Then soak them in coca-cola overnight. The next day
show the children the dingy teeth and explain to them that this is
what happens when you eat or drink sugary items. Then let the children
brush the "teeth" eggs with homemade toothpaste.
Homemade toothpaste-Combine: 1T. salt, 2T.baking powder, small amount
of peppermint flavoring.
BRUSHING MELODY
Teach children the following song to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your
Boat."
Have them practice the toothbrushing motions, holding their toothbrushes (or
imaginary ones) out in front of them while they are singing.
Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them every day.
Right, left, up, down, clean the plaque away.
Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them every day.
Front, back, take off the plaque, now we smile all day.
SHINY TEETH
Brush up on dental health with this fun art project! Cut a large tooth
shape
from yellow construction paper for each child. Then prepare a mixture of
three parts corn syrup, one part white tempera paint, and one part liquid
soap. Provide each child with a cutout, a toothbrush, and a small paper cup
of the paint mixture. Have the children "brush" their yellow teeth. The
white paint mixture will dry to a glossy finish resembling shiny enamel.
Display the painted cutouts in the classroom to show off those pearly whites

This is the poem we use to reinforce the letter "T".
I know how to brush my teeth
I brush on top and underneath
Up like a rocket
Down like a plane
Back and forth like a choo-choo train.
You could practice with a real tooth brush after memorizing this poem.
You could make a visual poster of this poem with a mouth full of teeth
-
a rocket - a plane and a train.
DENTAL HEALTH

A good art activity for taking care of your teeth. Cut out 2 large
teeth (root and all). One black and one white. Make a big smily
face on the white one and a frowny face on the black one. Cut out
good foods and paste on white. Cut out not so good food for your
teeth and glue on the black tooth. They love cutting out pictures
from magazines. During circle talk about good foods for the teeth.
Talk about foods that are'nt so good. I cut out 2 teeth. The same
ones I use for the art project but smaller. I glue them on
lunch sacks. Then there is a third sack. Have the kids pick from
the sack(foods or pictures of foods) and then they place it in the
right bag, white tooth or black tooth. You can also paint with thinned
down tooth paste on white teeth awith a tooth brush.( Save those
old tooth brushes.) We like to do these during dental week. Another
list shared the idea for doctors. We made a first aid kit, headband
with a circle covered with foil for the mirror. and made a stepacope(sp)
with a piece of yarn and a egg carton (one egg section) punch a hole
in each side and put the yarn through to go around the neack. Make
sense? The kids loved it.

Scrubbing, scrubbing, scrubbing scrubbing
Wisking plaque away!
We also talk about eating healthy foods & make a healthy snack
called "Apple Smiles"
Take 2 wedges of apples, smear with peanut butter & put in a few
marshmellows as "teeth" for a smile! (ok, so the marshmellows
aren't that "healthy" but they sure look cute!
