Been There Done
That

When we do our state(Michigan) theme, I have used all the brochures
and pamphlets that I have collected from hotels, restaurants, rest areas
etc... that highlight attractions in our state. As a group we briefly go
through all the brochures and talk a little about each place and whether
or not any of us has visted each place. For example when I hold up
a pamphlet on Mackinaw City the kids who recoginize the mackinaw bridge
will excitedly raise there hand and I give each of them a moment to talk
about their trip. Afterwards we use all the materials to make collages
of the places in our state that we have been or would like to visit and
the kids take it home to share it with their parents.
I have received feedback from my parents in the past and was even told that the
collage inspired the family to take a weekend trip to one of the attractions
that their child added to his collage.
State Scavenger Hunt
Submitted by Christa
As part of our unit on Texas, (use your
own state) we read about the different symbols and discuss their importance. Then, we write
down a scavenger hunt list of things we would like to try and see. Our
bus driver maps out a route and as we travel around, we use the list
to search for each item. Example, we saw longhorns, herds of
cattle, the Texas flag, cactus, horses, pumpjacks, and a windmill. When
we retured to the center, we drew pictures of the things we saw and
discussed some of the things we couldn't find. (blueonnets, they have
already bloomed and faded).Even though the kids have ridden on the
bus many times, they were so excited to find each item and the trip
was very pleasant. Yee-haw!!!
