COOKIE COLORS
Make different colored cookies (fun foam with decorations on top) and sing this song:
Down around the corner at the bakery shop
There were 10 little cookies with sugar on top.
Along came Sally with a penny to pay
And she took a (color word) one away.

COLORS

Submitted by Margaret
For each color, have your students paint a large tee shirt outlined on paper at the easel.  Have each student then cut out the shirts.  Finally, have each student find pictures in magazines of objects that are the same color as the shirt.  Cut the pictures out and glue on to the shirt.  When completed, all the shirts can be clipped together with two clothespins to go home.  (Shirts can be displayed in the room on a clothesline.)

WASHING LINE
Submitted by Ceri
Tie a piece of rope to two chairs to make a washing line, then get a bag of coloured pegs. in turn ask the children to pick a peg and ask them what colour it is, they can then peg it on the line. either this or ask the children in turn to pick a certain colour peg and then peg it on the line.

COLORED FEATHERS
Submitted by Claire
Use paper or real feathers baught at a craft store. Place feathers in a bag and have students draw one out. As each student draws out a feather they must name the color of the feather and an object that is the same color.

ORANGE ACTIVITIES
Slice a real orange in half and have the children make prints with orange paint - then have them use black markers after it has dried to make jack - o - lantern faces on them--Instant pumpkins.

Have the children color a  sheet of paper with orange crayon then coat the entire page with black paint.  After the paint has dried they can scratch designs with popsicles sticks onto the paper revealling the orange color underneath.

Identifying Orange (Language Development)
Put some orange objects (balloon, pumpkin, orange...) on a tray.  Children take turns identifying the color and the object.

Passing Oranges Game
Play some music.  Children pass around two oranges.  When the music stops, the two children with the oranges stand up and turn around before sitting down to begin the game again.  With older children, the two children who have the oranges could stand up and name an orange object in the room (or anywhere).

Orange Pudding
Tear 4 pieces of whole-wheat bread and crumble them into a blender.  Place the crumbs in a large bowl.  Next, blend together 1/2 cup milk, and 1/2 cup orange juice and 1/4  cup unsweetened frozen apple juice concentrate.  Add 2 eggs, 1 sliced banana, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 cup cooked pumpkin and a dash of salt.  Blend again.  Add the mixture to the bread crumbs.  Stir together and pour into a baking dish.  Bake for 50 minutes at 350º.  Serve slightly warm and top with whipped cream.  Makes 16 small servings.

MAGIC COLOR BOTTLES
Submitted by Sarina
My Magic Color Bottle
If you're teaching color this activity will be just great.
Collect of ask kids to bring from home, small plastic soda bottles on the day your are teaching color.
For eg. Blue
 You get ready these items:
 -Blue straws cut small pieces
 -Blue buttons
 -Blue glitters
 -Blue marbles
and anything blue you could think of that can go through the bottle rim.
Gather these items on table and call the children to pick all items and put them into the bottle.
Then ask the children to fill the bottle up with water. (They will love to do this)
Add Blue food colouring, just a drop or two. Too much will makes it look purple. Add a few drops of liquid soap, close it tight. Shake the bottle and they will enjoy it.

COLOR HAT BOOK
Make a color hat book.  It could be eight pages.  Use 1/2 pages.  Copy one style of hat or use different types.  Each page will have a color on it.  Children can paint, color, glue tissue paper or any art method you want.  The words on each page should be the same except for the color word.
Title page : I Have A Hat  ( this is page 1)
page 2: I have a red hat.
page 3: I have an orange hat.
page 4: I have a yellow hat.
page 5: I have a green hat.
page 6: I have a blue hat.
page 7: I have a purple hat.
page 8: I have a rainbow hat!

COLOR PLATES
Submitted by Becky
Cut out the insides of paper plates, leaving the rims intact (2 plates per finished product). Glue or tape colored cellophane covering the opening of one plate and tape or glue another plate to secure cellophane. Can add a popscicle stick for a handle. Use yellow, green and red cellophane. Children can hold up and view the world in different colors and can hold up two plates to make orange, green or purple. If room lighting is not very good, can do outside or have a flashlight or other light source nearby.
Can also cover toliet paper rolls on one end to make color telescopes.

COLOR GAMES
Lollipops
Directions to make lollipops... Cut three inch circles from construction paper (red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and purple.) Make three of each color. Glue craft sticks to each colored circle to make a lollipop. Have the children sit in a circle. One child is "it" and skips around the circle holding the lollipops in a coffee can while the other children chant.
Lollipops, lollipops, yum, yum, yum.
Lollipops, lollipops, yum, yum, yum.
Lollipops, lollipops, yum, yum, yum.
Please come over and give me some.
It stops in front of a child who closes their eyes and picks out a lollipop.
If the child guesses the correct color then they may take a turn being "it."

Wiggle Worm...
Decorate the outside of a small empty can (Formula cans work well) with paper and label Wiggle Worms.  Cut cardboard into 2 1/2 x 5'' rectangles. On the cardboard strips color a square with all the primary and secondary colors and then on four of the strips draw wiggle worms. Place all strips into can. Have the children sit in a circle.  One at a time, have the children pull out a card , and identify the color on it. If there is a wiggle worm on the bottom of the card, the child yells "Wiggle worms" and everyone should stand up and "wiggle like a worm."  Continue playing until all the cards are used.

COLOR CORNERS
Here's a colorful twist on the traditional Four Corners game. Tape a different color of construction paper in each corner of your classroom. Place a stack of color cards, facedown, in a central location. (You can use manufactured cards or make your own by gluing different colors of construction paper onto white construction paper cards.) Have each child
walk to any corner of the room that he chooses. Then turn over the top color card. After youngsters name the color on the card, each child who is standing in that particular color's corner takes his seat. Continue playing in the same manner--having students move to different corners before each card is drawn--until only one child is left standing. Then begin round two!

COLOR AND NUMBER REINFORCEMENT
Submitted by Diane
During play time, I set one of tables up with 5 snowmen which I
have laminated.  Each has a black hat with a number (1-5) and the
corresponding number of dots for buttons.  I then put out a dish of buttons
and they match up the number and place the buttons on the dots.  I also put
out a  mitten matching game.  I laminated 11x 14 pieces of paper on which I
traced mittens and colored them in various colors.  I made corresponding
mittens and they match them.  Great for number and color reinforcement.  I
also like to put out some "quiet" toys to keep our room "sane."

SQUISHY BAGS
Here's a good squishy bag basic. You can just use two colors to let children discover secondary colors; you can add all kinds of things- sequins, the tiny doodads from craft shops, tiny alphabet blocks, etc. Remember to check that seal! i  like the idea of extra sealing tape around the bag
if the children are very vigorous squishers!

Sensory:  Make squishy bags. In a saucepan, pour 1 cup cornstarch, 1/3 cup sugar, and four cups water. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently. The mixture will  start to turn lumpy, and then thicken into a  sort of vaseline-looking product. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Divide into 4-6 small strong ziploc  storage bags. Squirt in a few drops of food coloring in primary colors, aiming for different areas of the bags. Press out as much air as possible, and seal the bags. Fold a piece of duct tape over the top for added securit . Now- give to the kids, and let them squeeze and press the colors around. The colors will blend beautifully, and the bags will last for quite a while.

LINE ART TO MUSIC
Submitted by Janice
Play a selection of music.  Have children pick a marker and make a line on the paer from one end to the other as they move to the music (this is done on butcher paper with a small group).  Allow each child a turn.  When everyone has had a turn, select another piece of music and other markers-repeat.

Read Harold and the Purple Crayon.  After give each child white paper and a purple crayon.  Have them make lines which tell a story.

COLOR CHANT
Submitted by Susi
This is a great activity to do with the kids when you are learning about colors, and really anytime! It's active, it rhymes, and is
fun! Just do the movement or action called for in the chant.
When I say RED put your hands on your head.
When I say BLUE put your hands on your shoe.
When I say BLACK put your hands on your back.
When I say BROWN move your hands all around.
When I say GREEN wipe your face real clean
When I say PINK just think, think, think. (tap temple with finger)
When I say PURPLE make two little circles
When I say WHITE squeeze your fingers real tight
When I say YELLOW wave to the fellow
When I say TAN throw up your hands
When I say GRAY say have a nice day
When ORANGE is found make it big and round
The chant does not have to be in that order, you can mix it up how ever you want. But remember the order afterwards, because
if you don't the kids will remind you!!!
Have fun chanting!

COLOR DAY
Submitted by Carol
I have never tried this but it just popped into my head as I read your letter of request.
How about dressing totally in one color (or at least a solid primary color shirt) and have one or two of another color over the
first, depending on how many colors you want to introduce on one day.
You could sing: (sing to Frere Jacka)
I am GREEN
I am Green
Look at me
Look at me
Can't you see, I'm Green
Can't you see, I'm green
Look at me
Look at me.
Take a shirt off and sing the song over with the other color substituted.

ERIC CARLE ART/COLOR IDEA
Submitted by Betty
I use Brown Bear, Brown Bear with my color theme.  I take a color a day (I teach 4's and most of them already know their colors).  We read the book over and over again. I also show the video (Scholastic) about Eric Carle which shows how he creates his art.  We try to use his techniques!  He uses a lot of tissue paper but we work on manilla (tried working on tissue one year and it was too frustrating).  For red bird,  the children place small pcs. of red tissue on a bird outline with starch.  You could have them tear pcs., too, for more fine motor developing.  We save the bird, but let them do more on a plain sheet so it can be open-ended.  For each color animal, they repeat the process but we vary the techniques......we finger paint the blue horse (that's the same day I save a print of their hands!!!), we splatter paint, we feather paint ( the yellow duck!), we use carpet square prints, we use the handle end of the paint brush, etc.  If you look carefully at Carle's work, you can get the children to
brainstorm how he did it. When they are all finished and we have save the animal pictures......I make it a book and they take iT home to read and read and read!  We end the whole unit with a painting day where a group paints creating the colors he usesfor his suns (he almost always has a sun in his work!!!), some children mix red and blue to create his purple tones, another group creates his green tones, etc.  We then share all these paintings and they cut and make a collage of the Hungry Caterpillar and anything else they would like!  I hope i am clear on this...........
To those of you who get Mailbox, this idea was submitted by me  and appeared in their last issue!  It might make better sense in there because they reworded it to make more sense, I'm sure!!!!   Wish I could show you a finished copy of our book and our Hungry Caterpillars.  My students can spot an E. Carle book a mile away!!!
We are all so proud of our fellow looper! Congrats on getting published, Betty!

SHAPES & COLORS
Submitted by Donna
ANd in the middle of the year, as a review of shapes and colors, you can have the children fingerpaint certain shapes and colors.
Not only could this serve as a review, but it could also be an introduction to the concept of objects having multiple descriptive qualities...(i.e a purple circle vs a red circle...or a yellow oval vs purple oval)
Another activity, which also reviews these concepts while working on gross motor skills is to have the children stand up/sit down/stand on 1 leg, jump in place, etc as their particular color AND shape is called...(Emphasize that both the children's color AND shape must match the one called) Shapes may be made out of construction paper and laminated.
In the free play area, you could make up cards for a memory game with specific shapes and colors on them, with the names of both written on the cards. Hope these ideas help!! :-)

NUMBERS & COLORS
Submitted by Peg
For an aid in teaching color and numbers I use washable markers and place a color or number on each finger of the children (different one on each) and we  sing (tune of Thumbkin) Where is ______ man, corresponding to what is on the finger. This activity helps to strengthen those fingers and makes them  concentrate on holding up the correct ones. They don't seem to want to wash hands afterwards so they can keep singing it :)

Cheap Paint Cups
Submitted by Margie
Use lids from Laundry soap containers and cut circles out of large sponges. Drop the lids into the middle of the cut-out sponges so that the wide rim of the cup sits upon the sponge.  Now you have paint cups where the over-spill of paint goes onto the sponge!!

Title: Color Tracking
Submitted by Betty
Trace bear outlines on to good , all white paper towels with a washable BLACK marker.  Have the children use water and a brush and soak the black line (good, fine motor)...since black is made up of several colors, it will "bleed" out from the line.  It is facinating to the children....there's some science in there, too!!!....

Title:Basic Teaching Cards
Following submitted by Suzanne
Use index cards to make a set of 12 game cards.  On each set of 4 cards, draw or glue on pictures that are alike in some way.
(For example~ one set would have a red apple, a red wagon, a red car, and a red balloon.  Another set would have 4 yellow items, & set 3 would be all blue.)

To play:  Lay out 3 matching cards and one card that does not belong in the group.  Ask the children to identify the different picture and to explain why it doesn't belong in the group.

Some ideas for using the cards...
Animal Cards:  Make 3 sets of 4: farm animals, ocean animals, zoo animals
Beginning Sounds:  4 cards per set with the same beginning sound (ball, baby, bed, bear)
Number Cards:  Make teaching cards as directed making 4 cards containing pictures of 1 object, a set of cards containing
pictures of 2 objects and a set of cards containing 3 pictures per card.
Shape Cards: Use cards for shape recognition by making a set of pictures with similar shapes (a ball, a clock, & a wheel).

Title: COLORS
Submitted by Dora
Here are several activities using jellybeans to help children learn their colors.

Materials:  A bag of jellybeans, a supply of "paper" jellybeans that correspond to the colors of the candy, white bulletin board
paper (or other large white paper for graphing)

Procedure:  Open a bag of jellybeans and invite each child to take one.  Ask each child to hold up his jellybean when you name its color.  once each child is sure of her jellybean color, let her eat it!   Then sing this silly song.  As each different colro word is substituted, encourag the children who ate a bean that color to stand up and rub their tummies.

Title: Jelly Beans in My Tummy (sing to tune of Skip to My Lou)
(Red) jelly beans - yum, yum
(Red) jelly beans - yum, yum
(Red) jelly beans - yum,yum
Jelly beans in my tummy!

After several rounds of the song, the children might have picked their favorite flavors.Prepare a graph  by drawing a rainbow tha has a segment for each different color of jellybeans. Ask each child to pick a paper jellybean shape that represents his favorite flavor, then personalize the shape.  Help each child glue his or hershape to the rainbow to create a graph.  Discuss results and eat more jellybeans!

Title: Art:  Jellybeans stamping
Materials:  Large Jellybeans, Film canisters, glue gun
Cut large jellybean in half, lengthwise.  Hot glue each half to the bottom of a separate film canister so that its flat side can be used for printing.  Make the desired number of stamps or make a pair of jelly bean stamps for each color.  Provide shallow contiaers of paints that correspond to thecolors of the beans.  Encourage each child to use the samps to make prints on a cut out shape of a jellybean.

Title: Flannelboard Activity
Materials:  Flannelboard, Five different oclors offelt jellybean shapes
Procedure:  Have the children countdown the disappearing colors of jellybeans as you say this rhyme
Five little jellybeans
I wish Ihad more!
I'll eat the (colro word) one;
Now there are four.

Four little jelly beans
Tasty as can be
I'll eat the (color) one;
Now there are three.

Three little jelly beans;
Only a few
I'll eat the (color) one
Now there are two.

Two little jellybeans;
Eating them is fun.
I'll eat the(color) one;
Now there is one.

One little jelly bean;
The last one for me.
I'll eat the (color) one;
I'm happy as can be!

Title: Science (Soda Surprise)
Materials:  Jelly beans (Jelly Belly brand does not work), Clear carbonated drink (Sprite, 7Up etc) Ice cube trays.

Procedure:  Pour carbonated drink into as many ice cube sections as you have children.  Ask each child to choose a color of jellybean, name its color, and drop it inot a section.  Freeze the cubes.  During snacktime, put a cube into a clear plastic cup for each child.  Have each child find a cube that corresponds to the color of bean he selected.  Pour more of the clear carbonated drink into his cup.  As they watch the ice melt, youngsters iwll be surprised to see the clear soda blush iwth color.  Remove  the colorless bean from each child's cup and have them sample soda.  Drinks taste like jellybeans!
