Swinging Monkeys
Submitted by Linda
When I take children out to play and I'm monitoring the swings I like to play a musical game with them.
I will sing the following song adjusting the number to how many children are swinging.
Three little monkeys swinging in a tree
Teasing Mr. Crocodile "you can't catch me , No you can't catch me."
Here comes Mr. Crocodile as quiet as can be.
(Put hands together and wiggle them around like a crocodile creeping around)
"Gotcha!" (catch the child but be careful not to let the game get too wild so children won't fall off swings trying to avoid getting caught.)
Repeat song until all children swinging have been caught by the crocodile. Depending on the time span of outdoor play and the number of children on swings, this song may be used as a "timer" to let them know how long they get to swing before they need to get off and let other children have a turn.
Are You Listening
Submitted by Brienne
(are you sleeping)
Are you listening, are you listening
Everyone, Everyone,
If you are listening, if you are listening
Clap three times (clap,clap,clap)
(do this more times with different actions until everyone is listening)
Music in Our Schools Month
Collect a wide range of musical tapes. Ask students if they know what a maestro is. After explaining that a maestro is "a conductor or teacher of music," encourage students to pretend to conduct music as you play tapes. Play just a brief sample from a tape; then ask that students describe what they heard with just a word or two. Continue playing snippets from a variety of musical pieces--pausing each time to have students describe the music with either real or made-up words and contrast it with other music they have conducted. Was it faster, slower, louder, softer? Was it played glowingly, marchingly, or swingingly?
PEANUT SAT ON THE TRACK
A Peanut sat
On a Railway track
Its heart was all a flutter (pat chest fast)
Around the bend
Came a train
CHOO CHOO (make whistle sound)
Splat! (clap hands loudly)
Peanut Butter!
apple/apple juice ; strawberry/strawberry jam ; banana/banana split
WHO IS HERE TODAY? (tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)
Let's see who is here today,
Who has come to join our play?
Everyone sit close at hand,
Say your name, then you can stand,
Let's see who is here today,
Who has come to join our play?
Too Much Noise
Swish, swish, swish.
Too much noise.
Can you help me,
Girls and boys?
Swish, swish, swish.
Swish some more.
Swish that noise
Right out the door.
Substitute: crunch,buzz,beep or splash.

Two little hands go clap, clap, clap

LINE ART TO MUSIC
Submitted by Janice
Play a selection of music. Have children pick a marker and make a line on the paer from one end to the other as they move to the music (this is done on butcher paper with a small group). Allow each child a turn. When everyone has had a turn, select another piece of music and other markers-repeat.
Read Harold and the Purple Crayon. After give each child white paper and a purple crayon. Have them make lines which tell a story.
Guessing game with Music
Submitted by Wilma
This simple activity provides the children to learn to use their hearing sense. Materials needed for this
activity are: cardboard tubes (from toliet paper rolls, tape, stuff to decroate, paper, glue and items to put
inside the tube(pennies, pasta, buttons, etc.). Cover one side of the tube with paper and secure it with
tape, put in the objects-one kind in each tube, secure it with paper and tape. You can decorate at this time
or just before you assemble the item. This will be great for the child to to put together. The child can
make music while others guess what is inside the tube.
Once this has been done, let the children make thier own music. If you don't want the children to know what
is inside some of the tubes feel free to have some samples ready for guessing.
Song Bag
Add more variety to your daily sing-along by allowing youngsters to choose songs to be sung from a song bag. Select one item to represent each of your youngsters' favorite songs; then place the items in a drawstring bag. When it's time for a sing-along, have your song leader reach into the bag and draw out an item. Then have him lead the class in singing the song
represented by the item he selected. With this easy selection method, you'll spend less time choosing songs and more time singing.

MUSICAL GAMES
Submitted by Peggy
Try a game similiar to a cake walk. Draw or tape a grid on the floor and put musical notes in grid squares. Children march around grid to music. When music stops children stop on one square. Pick a note out of a hat and child on the matching note says it's letter equivalent.
Make necklaces. Half have musical note - other half have the letter equivalent.
Give each child a necklace. Play music and children march around - or move bodies to music. When music stops children find the child with the matching necklace.
Make simple puzzle pieces. Take tag board and on one half of tag board draw musical note. On other half write matching letter. Cut tag board in half like a puzzle piece - in other words curved, zig-zag, angled. Make same for each musical note being sure to cut each differently. Laminate for duribility. Children match puzzle pieces.
SONG TO START DAY
Submitted by Diane
Hi everyone, I teach three years old and start our day with a number of different songs. Two favorites are:
Two little hands go, clap, clap, clap
Two little feet go, tap, tap, tap
Two little hands go, thump, thump, thump (make two fists and hit together)
Two little feet go, jump, jump, jump
One little body turns around, and around and around and
Quietly sits down.
This is the way we start our day, start our day, start our day.
This is the way we start our day, so early in the morning.
First we smile and shake a hand (we shake each other's hands)
Shake a hand, shake a hand
First we smile and shake a hand, so early in the morning, then
We give a great big hug (we hug each other)
A great big hug, a great big hug
Then we give a great big hug so early in the morning.
Then we sit down quietly, quietly, quietly,
Then we sit down quietly, so early in the morning.
After we sing our welcome song, they all step off our rug, hide their eyes and I place down sit-upons with their names. They then love to try to find their place to sit down. This also gives me a little control as to where some children should sit. I also find it keeps them in their place instead of trying to roll around on our carpet, most especially the younger ones.
Musical Pom Poms
Submitted by Lisa
I went to a local store and found pompoms on clearance. Even though we use real musical instruments in our daily curriculum, the children absolutely loved twisting and twirling with the pom poms. It was easy to teach them beat. They shook the pompoms everytime I had them hit the beat on each song. It was a fun activity.
MUSIC & MOVEMENT PROPS
Submitted by Suzi
A couple of years ago I bought a whole bunch of cute kids printed 1" elastic. I had a mom who sewed make loops of elastic (about 4-5 feet per loop) for the children to do M&M activities with. Each child gets a loop, and we discover what we can do with it with our bodies. We stretch it, make shapes with it etc.... I also have a wonderful record by Thomas Moore called "My Magical World" that has a great song you can use with the elastic bands. It's a lot of fun, and the kids ask for the "big rubber bands" time and time again

hang bolts with the string at different lenghts on the stick or dowel rod, then tie a longer piece of string to the top of the stick or dowel rod for holding, use spoon to hit the bolts for a chiming musical or hang in front of a fan for sound or you can also hang outside and let the wind make the music.
BODY BAND
Entice children to use their own body parts as instruments with this idea. To begin, clap a simple rhythm with your hands; then invite students to join in as you repeat the rhythm. After a few rounds, begin another body-part rhythm such as foot tapping or thigh- slapping. Continue in this manner to model a variety of body parts and rhythms. Then invite each child in turn to lead the class in a body-rhythm pattern. Afterward, play some lively music, encouraging students to join the band by playing and body instrument they choose. What beautiful music!
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT _ WAY TOO FUNNY!
Submitted by Mary Ellen
Musical Straws
The catagory of music is a loose application. Kids love to do this because it so shocks grownups. Take straws ( the kind that bend at the top). The straw needs to be put in a body joint. You can use elbows, behind the knee, armpits, even someone else's neck with the chin bent down. Put the bottom of the straw in the joint and blow. You may have to adjust the position but a very satisfying (for children),gassy sound happens. Kids love trying to imitate songs they know with this instrument--if they can stop laughing long enough to blow that is.

inside the paper towel roll. Tape the ends down on
both sides of the roll. Use colorful streamers to

MUSIC AND MOVEMENT BB
The idea is to have different songs/finger plays/poems or whatever for the children to choose each day.
Make a kite that is attached to the top of the bulletin board, it's point actually suspended a bit from the ceiling. Add clouds and streamers for the sky. Then, attach a thick piece of string to the end of the kite that is the tail. This tail is long and is attached to the bulletin board. Then, take tagboard in different pastel colors and cut them into bow shapes. On each bow print a song, a finger play, or a poem. Then number each bow (we have, I believe, 19). The bows are attached to the tail with clothespins. Each day about 5 children are selected to choose which number bow they want to unpin from the tail and we sing/recite what is written on it. The children love this! The bulletin will change with the season/theme. For example, in October we will have pumpkins in a pumpkin patch and the children will select a pumpkin and we will sing the song.
CLEAN UP TIME
Submitted by Janet
Clean up time. I have relabeled my shelves for easier clean up. I used the clear plastic sleeves for trading cards. I used double sided tape to stick the sleeves to the shelf and another on the tub the toys are in. I cut out pictures matching the toys using catalogs. I glued these pictures to trimmed down index cards and laminated them. In most cases I made two of each picture. I store them in a recipe type file box. Now any time I change out toys I can easily change out the labels. The children have been very successful finding the correct tub and the proper place on the shelf.
CLEAN UP TRAIN
Get on the right track and make your room spotless as your youngsters climb aboard the Cleanup Express. Each day when it's cleanup time, blow a train whistle. Then say, "All aboard the Cleanup Express," and invite youngsters to line up behind you. "Chug" around the room, making stops at each area or center, and have your little ones tidy up. What a fun way to get the job done! Toot, toot, puff, puff!
Everybody Sit Down
Submitted by Marilyn
Tune: Shortenin' Bread
Everybody sit down, sit down, sit down. Everybody sit down on the floor. Not on the ceiling, not on the door, not on each other but on the floor.
OR/
Everybody sit down, sit down, sit down. Everybody sit down on a mat. Not on a dog and not on a cat, not on each other but on a mat.
The kids love this and always sit down after doing a movement song. Once they learn it well I take out a recorder, kazoo, or clarinet and play the melody. You will be surprized at how they automatically sit down! Also, I sing it really fast after they learn it well-just to be funny.
CIRCLE-TIME SONG
Need to get your youngsters to clean up for circle time? Just sing this transitional tune!
(sung to the tune of "Oh, Playmate, Come Out and Play With Me")
Say, say, oh, children,
Please put our things away,

And learn in every way.
Come find your places,
In a circle on the floor,
So we can grow and learn,
And much, much more!

At clean up time,
the Clean Up Helper rings a school bell, and everyone sings the Barney Clean Up song while we straighten up and put away.
When we come in from recess,
we sing a song that I got from the loop, sung to London Bridges Falling Down:
Everybody please line up!
Please line up! Please line up!
Everybody please line up!
We are going inside!
Then come in the door,
and we're singing, (tune: There's a spider on the Floor)
Please sit down on the rug, on the rug!

Please sit down on the rug and give yourself a hug!
Please sit down on the rug, on the rug!

End of day we sing same song as beginning, different words:
We had fun today!
We're glad you came to play!
So long for now, good-bye my friends,
We'll play another day!
GETTING EVERYONE IN CIRCLE
Submitted by Dawn
I have an in-home daycare that focuses on toddlers. Sometimes getting them to sit in a circle for circle time is quite a challenge. I have found that doing Ring-Around-the-Roses and then all falling down is a fun way to get them sitting. It's also a nice toddler cue so that they can prepare for the singing!!
TRANSITION
I have a new co-teacher this year, and she has taught our kindergarten class the best way to keep a quiet orderly line while we are waiting for hands to get washed, or whenever. We call it "the quiet game". The teacher selects a quiet child to go first. They stand next to the line so they can see all the kids, and then they pick someone who is being quiet and still. That person becomes the next one to pick, and the other child goes into the vacant spot in the line. It sounds dull and boring but they love it, and now even start it on their own and don't need a teacher to supervise. When a number of children have gone, we have the kids who have not had a turn hold their thumbs up so the child who's turn it is to pick can tell. You've got to try it, it really works!
CIRCLE TIME

There's ________ and ________ (go around the room letting the children say
their names)
Here we are together, all here on the floor.
It also is a good way for the children to get to know one anothers names.

TRANSITION TO OUTSIDE
Submitted by Suzi
If you want to go outside
this is what you've gotta do
We're gonna line up like the Big Kids do!
So clap your hands
Stomp your feet on the floor
And when we're all ready
We'll open up the door!
Transition Poem that I made up to use in my classroom
Submitted by Tonya
First tell the children what it is you want them to do then recite this poem:
If you have on red then you heard what I said.
If you have on blue then you know what to do.
If you have on white then you know what's I right.
(This means that children know that it's right to get in the back of the line instead of in front of someone.)
If you have on black then your name must be Jack.
If you have on pink then you know what I think.
If you hve on yellow then you're a nice fellow.
If you have on purple then you like to eat Slurple.
(Slurple is like the 7-Eleven drink Slurpee. Your class will ask you what it is believe me because my class did.)
If you have on brown then you better get down.
If you have on grey then it's going to be a wonderful day.

Transition Time
Submitted by Mary
I found these songs for transition times in the new issue of Early Childhood News magazine. They worked great with my 5 year olds.
This one is good for circle time, bring your props in a bag and sing:
"Surprise Song" ( tune "I'm a Little Teapot" )
What's in the surprise sack, who can tell?
Maybe it's a book, or maybe it's a shell.
What's in the surprise sack, who can see?
It's something special for you and me!
It was suggested this song be used for clean up time:
"Jolly Good Helper" ( tune "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" )
(Name) is a jolly good helper.
(Name) is a jolly good helper.
(Name) is a jolly good helper,
They're picking up the toys.
We have a helper of the day in our classroom so I changed the words a little bit and now we sing this song to recognize our helper at the beginning of the day:
(Name) is a jolly good helper.
(Name) is a jolly good helper.
(Name) is a jolly good helper,
(Name) is the helper today.
Title: Transition to Circletime
Submitted by Sharon
Actually, this is a funky little verse you can jazz up with hand clapping and body grooving!I use it every day and the children LOVE it!
If you want to hear a story,
This is what you gotta do,
You gotta sit on the rug,
Like the pretzels do!
So find your place and clap your hands,
So (insert your name here) will know that you understand.
Put your hands in your lap,
And turn on your ears!
'Cause.....here is the story that your gonna hear!
(hold up the book)
At this point the children let out a cheer and quickly quiet for story
